screens connecting to institutions

Perplexity added custom remote MCP connector support in March 2026. That means the same Truthifi connection that gives Claude access to your real Fidelity 401k, Vanguard IRA, and Schwab brokerage account now works inside Perplexity, with the same five-minute OAuth setup and the same read-only, audit-logged architecture.

Here's what that unlocks: you open Perplexity, ask about your real portfolio, and get an answer grounded in today's holdings. Not general market information, not a hypothetical, not a month-old statement you uploaded. Your real numbers, live, inside the AI you're already using for research.

Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers can connect their Perplexity financial accounts to live brokerage data using Truthifi as the secure data layer. This guide covers the setup, the cost, and how it sits alongside Perplexity's own native Finance feature.

Before the setup — one thing worth knowing

Perplexity launched its own Portfolio feature in March 2026, which connects brokerage accounts via Plaid and lets you ask questions about your holdings inside Perplexity Finance.

Truthifi does something different. The two work together fine. They're just not the same thing.

Perplexity Finance (native) connects your accounts through Plaid and surfaces your holdings inside the Perplexity Finance tab, integrated with live market data, SEC filings, and earnings information. It works on the free tier and is well-suited for investors who do most of their research inside Perplexity.

Truthifi's MCP connector runs your brokerage data through 400+ semantic decoders before it reaches any AI, achieving 99.7% investment data accuracy (Truthifi internal measurement, Q4 2025). Beyond clean data, Truthifi continuously monitors your accounts against 100+ wellness diagnostics — performance measured against personalised benchmarks, fee analysis, concentration and correlation risk, and advisor performance tracking — so the intelligence your AI reasons from is already enriched, not just raw holdings. One authorization covers Perplexity, Claude, and ChatGPT. Every data request is logged in a per-request audit trail that Perplexity Finance doesn't currently offer.

The full comparison is at Perplexity Finance vs. Truthifi: What's the Difference?

Is it safe to connect Perplexity to your brokerage?

Yes. The short answer is that this connection is safer than most people expect, for a structural reason that goes beyond a terms-of-service promise.

The connection uses OAuth 2.0, the same authorization standard used when you sign in with Google or Apple. Your Fidelity, Vanguard, or Schwab login credentials never pass through Truthifi or Perplexity. Truthifi holds a read-only token scoped at the protocol level, meaning the connection architecturally cannot initiate transactions regardless of what you or Perplexity ask it to do.

All data is encrypted in transit and at rest with AES-256. Every access request is logged. You can revoke the connection at any time from your Truthifi account or directly from your brokerage's authorized apps page.

What you need

You need a paid Truthifi account (Monitoring plan, $79.99/year) and a paid Perplexity subscription (Pro, Max, or Enterprise). Your brokerage accounts must be linked inside Truthifi first. No coding, no developer accounts, no API keys. The entire setup runs through Perplexity's Connectors settings.

  • A paid Truthifi account: Monitoring ($79.99/year) or Monitoring Plus+ ($249.99/year). A 30-day free trial is available at truthifi.com/pricing.

  • A paid Perplexity subscription: Pro, Max, or Enterprise. Custom remote MCP connectors are not available on Perplexity's free tier as of April 2026.

  • Your brokerage accounts linked inside Truthifi: do this first at app.truthifi.com before adding the connector to Perplexity.

  • No coding required: the entire setup works through Perplexity's Connectors settings and an OAuth screen.

Once those are in place, the setup takes about five minutes.

Setup: five steps

Step 1 — Open Connectors in Perplexity

Go to perplexity.ai, click your profile icon (bottom left of the screen), then navigate to Settings → Connectors. This is where all your MCP connections are managed.

Step 2 — Add a custom remote connector

Click + Custom connector in the top-right corner. In the modal that opens, select Remote.

Fill in the following:

  • Name: Truthifi

  • MCP Server URL: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp

  • Description: Live portfolio data — Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab, 18,000+ institutions

  • Authentication: OAuth 2.0

  • Transport: Streamable HTTP

Check the acknowledgement box and click Add.

Step 3 — Authorize your accounts

Perplexity will redirect you to Truthifi's OAuth screen. Sign in to your Truthifi account and click Authorize.

Step 4 — Enable the connector

The Truthifi connector appears in your Connectors list. In Perplexity conversations, toggle it on from the Sources selector at the bottom of the chat.

Step 5 — Verify

Send: "What is my current asset allocation across all my connected accounts?"

If Perplexity responds with your actual holdings, you're live.

Supported institutions

Truthifi covers the institutions most individual investors hold accounts with, including:

Fidelity, Vanguard, Charles Schwab (including former TD Ameritrade accounts), Robinhood, E*TRADE, Webull, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Coinbase, Kraken, Chase, Bank of America, and 18,000+ more through Plaid, Yodlee, and Morningstar ByAllAccounts. Sign up free at truthifi.com to confirm your institution before subscribing.

What Perplexity can do with your live portfolio data

Once connected, Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers can ask questions about their real Fidelity, Vanguard, and Schwab accounts that require your actual numbers, not estimates.

Asset allocation and drift

"What is my current allocation across equities, fixed income, and cash? How does it compare to a 60/40 portfolio?"

Fee analysis

"List every fund I hold with an expense ratio above 0.5% and calculate my total annual fee drag."

Retirement readiness

"My Schwab IRA has $340,000 and my Fidelity 401k has $118,000. At 7% annual growth and $1,500/month in contributions, when do I hit $2M?"

Concentration risk

"What percentage of my total portfolio is in technology stocks, including through index funds?"

Cross-account rebalancing

"I hold the same S&P 500 index in both my Fidelity 401k and my Schwab IRA. What's my effective combined position and blended expense ratio?"

How the connection works

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard developed by Anthropic in 2024 that lets AI assistants connect to external data sources through a standardized, secure channel. Think of it as a controlled pipe: Perplexity can read data through it, but cannot write to, move, or trade anything in your accounts.

OAuth 2.0 is the authorization standard that handles authentication. Your brokerage credentials are entered directly on your brokerage's own login page, not on any Truthifi or Perplexity screen.

The Truthifi MCP server handles four things:

  1. Authentication. An OAuth token scoped to read-only access is issued. Your brokerage login never passes through Truthifi or Perplexity at any point in this process.

  2. Data retrieval. Truthifi pulls your holdings, balances, cost basis, and expense ratios from Plaid, Yodlee, and Morningstar ByAllAccounts.

  3. Normalization. 400+ semantic decoders translate raw aggregated feeds into clean, verified data. This is where Truthifi adds its value on top of the aggregation layer — resolving cost basis gaps, ticker mismatches, and incomplete lot records that are inherent to how financial data moves between institutions and aggregators.

  4. Delivery. The normalized data reaches Perplexity through the MCP channel. Nothing persists between sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work on Perplexity's free plan? No. Custom remote MCP connectors require a paid Perplexity subscription (Pro, Max, or Enterprise) as of April 2026.

Can Perplexity place trades or move money through this connection? No. The connection is read-only at the protocol level. Perplexity cannot initiate transactions regardless of what you ask it to do.

I already use Perplexity Finance to track my portfolio. Do I still need Truthifi? Perplexity Finance and Truthifi serve related but different purposes. For the full comparison, see Perplexity Finance vs. Truthifi: What's the Difference?

Can I revoke access? Yes. Remove the Truthifi connector from Perplexity's Connectors settings, or log into Truthifi and disconnect individual institutions. No contact with Truthifi required.

Which Truthifi plan do I need? MCP access requires a paid Truthifi plan: Monitoring ($79.99/year) or Monitoring Plus+ ($249.99/year). A 30-day free trial is available.

If you've followed the steps above, you now have Perplexity connected to live, verified data from your Fidelity, Vanguard, and Schwab accounts. A useful first question to try: ask Perplexity what your blended expense ratio is across all accounts. Most investors who check this for the first time are surprised by the answer.

Disclaimer: Informational only — not financial advice. Truthifi is read-only and cannot execute trades or move money. Review all third-party connections carefully before granting access to financial accounts.
