Generic advice from an AI assistant won't tell you much, whether you're asking about a Betterment AI assistant or how to connect Betterment to AI. Across everything you connect, Truthifi's engine corrects and enriches the incoming data first, so your AI reasons over normalized data, not a raw feed. You get useful answers only once you connect your real accounts to it. If you're looking at Betterment to connect your real accounts and get answers specific to your own numbers, here's what's possible today. You'll also see how to give your AI assistant your full financial life, your automated portfolio, your retirement accounts, and your true net worth, in one place your AI can actually reason about, instead of scattered across separate logins. It's free to start, with no code required.

Betterment's automatic gain/loss offsetting and automatic rebalancing only act on the dollars Betterment holds. They can't see the 401(k) at your employer's plan provider, the IRA at another firm, or the fund expenses those accounts charge. So your household's all-in cost and retirement pace stay split across logins, and Betterment's dashboard is built to show the accounts it holds, not the whole picture. Bring your connected accounts together, and your AI sees the full arc.

What is an MCP?

MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is the open standard that lets an AI assistant connect to services over a connection you grant. Instead of you pasting numbers in or uploading Betterment statements, the assistant reads your data from Truthifi's daily refresh and you can end access whenever you choose. Anthropic introduced the standard (modelcontextprotocol.io), and other AI companies, OpenAI among them, have announced support for it. A "Betterment MCP" would be that same plug built for your Betterment data. For how Truthifi's own server works, see the Truthifi MCP page.

Does Betterment have an MCP server?

No official Betterment MCP server exists as of October 2026, based on our October 6, 2026 review of Betterment's site and public MCP listings.2 Based on that same review, Betterment does not offer a public consumer-facing API, and our search turned up no community-built MCP repos for Betterment, though one could appear after our check. For now, the practical route for getting your Betterment data into an AI assistant is a financial data aggregator, which is how Truthifi works. In short: no official server, no public consumer API, no community repo found, and read-only aggregation as the working route.

Betterment's dashboard covers your Betterment accounts; Truthifi decodes your Betterment positions, fees, tax drag, portfolio overlap, and risk exposure alongside the other brokerage, bank, and retirement accounts you connect, giving your AI a plain-language picture of your whole financial life. This setup makes the most sense for anyone who already trusts Betterment to run the automated side of their investing and simply wants their AI to see that alongside everything else they hold.

What Betterment does

Betterment is an automated investing and financial services platform built around one idea: make investing and managing money simpler and more tax-efficient. The aim is that your money grows without the daily attention a self-managed portfolio demands.1 Founded in 2008 by Jon Stein and Eli Broverman, it serves over 1 million customers from its New York, NY headquarters, according to Betterment's own site. It's designed for:

  • Automated investing: globally diversified ETF portfolios with automatic rebalancing, automatic gain/loss offsetting, and dividend reinvesting. (Betterment Investing)

  • Self-directed investing: trade individual stocks and ETFs with tax-impact previews and fractional shares, no commissions or management fees.

  • IRAs: traditional, Roth, and SEP IRA accounts with tax-advantaged automated investing.

  • High-yield cash (Cash Reserve): FDIC insurance through program banks up to Betterment's stated limits, no fees or minimums, variable APY.

  • Checking account: no foreign transaction or ATM withdrawal fees.

  • Solo 401(k): retirement account for self-employed individuals.

  • Crypto and bond investing: managed portfolios of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs alongside stable income portfolios from Goldman Sachs and BlackRock.

  • Socially responsible investing (SRI): ESG-focused portfolios for values-aligned investors.

  • Premium: 1:1 advice from a CFP with exclusive investing options.

About Betterment: founded 2008 by Jon Stein and Eli Broverman · headquartered in New York, NY · independent private company (Betterment LLC) · over 1 million customers (self-reported) · apps for web and mobile.

Good to know about Betterment

Quick answers to what people ask most, with Betterment's own resources:2

  • What does it cost? Betterment offers automated-investing tiers, a premium tier with CFP access, and self-directed investing; see Betterment's pricing page for current fees, minimums, and which rate applies to your balance.

  • How does automatic gain/loss offsetting work? Betterment automatically harvests losses within your automated portfolio; on paid plans, Truthifi refreshes your data automatically once a day, or you can trigger an on-demand refresh, so your AI sees the results.

  • What about my existing retirement accounts? Betterment offers traditional, Roth, and SEP IRAs, plus a Solo 401(k) for the self-employed. But if you hold a workplace 401(k) or other accounts elsewhere, Betterment's dashboard isn't built to show you how everything fits together.

  • How do I manage my plan? Account settings and tier changes live in your Betterment dashboard. Pricing details are at betterment.com/pricing.

  • What about my other accounts? Your Betterment portfolio is one part of your financial life. Your 401(k), taxable brokerage, savings, and checking accounts live elsewhere, and seeing how your automated portfolio interacts with all of them is where connecting those accounts to your AI adds the most value.

That last question is where connecting Betterment and your other accounts via Truthifi makes the biggest difference. The next section walks through what Truthifi actually adds.

Betterment API: getting your Betterment data for AI

Does Betterment have an API? Not a public one for your own account data, per our October 6, 2026 review. Connecting Betterment through Truthifi gives your AI assistant read-only, programmatic access to your Betterment account data over MCP (the Model Context Protocol) — without needing an official Betterment API. Your login goes to the aggregator rather than through Truthifi (details in the safety section below). Your assistant can query balances, holdings, and transactions across Betterment and your other connected accounts in one view, read-only by architecture. Connect your accounts to your AI →

How Truthifi can help

Truthifi links your real accounts to your AI assistant and brings your whole financial picture into one view your AI can reason about, pulling in accounts from 18,000+ institutions, decoded into clean data rather than a raw feed. It comes from an independent source with no commissions, no ads, no advice. Along the way, Truthifi's data-cleaning layer corrects and reconciles what it reads before your AI sees it, so the figures across your connected accounts are checked against each other. For your investment accounts, Truthifi runs 130+ portfolio-health checks, per Truthifi platform data, and reconciles holdings with synthetic share accounting, so cash moving in or out doesn't distort your true performance. Once Betterment is connected, try asking:

  • "What's my net worth across my connected accounts right now?"

  • "Where do I stand for retirement, and what's dragging on my returns?"

  • "Across my investments, which ones are costing me the most in fees?"

  • "Which holding am I most concentrated in, and does that pose a risk?"

Take a common household: Betterment runs the taxable portfolio and a Roth IRA, automatic gain/loss offsetting on. The workplace 401(k) sits with an employer's plan provider, and a rollover IRA from a past job sits at another firm. Betterment's management fee covers only the first two; the fund expenses in the other accounts show up on different statements. So "given all of it, where do things stand for retirement at 60, and what is this costing me in total fees?" has meant checking three separate logins. With those accounts connected, the AI can answer it in a single question. One check worth running first: Betterment builds its automated portfolios from ETFs, and its US stock funds may own many of the same large companies as a broad index or target-date fund in your 401(k). Neither Betterment's dashboard nor your plan provider's site adds those weights together, so you can be more concentrated than either suggests.

There's a less obvious gap, too. Betterment's automatic gain/loss offsetting sells a fund at a loss and buys a similar replacement, but it can only account for the accounts Betterment manages. If a taxable brokerage account or IRA held elsewhere buys a substantially identical fund inside the wash-sale window, the IRS may disallow the harvested loss, according to IRS Publication 550. With both sides connected, your AI can flag a likely overlap to bring to a tax professional.

With your Betterment account plus your other financial accounts in front of your AI, they work together. Real examples:

  • "If my Betterment portfolio's fee is 0.25% a year, what am I paying in total fees across my connected accounts this year, and what does that cost me over 10 years at 7% growth?"

  • "How does my Betterment automated portfolio overlap with my 401(k) holdings, am I more concentrated than I realize?"

  • "Given my Betterment accounts, my 401(k), and my taxable brokerage, am I on pace to retire at 60? Model conservative, moderate, and optimistic cases."

  • "Did any of my other accounts buy a fund similar to one Betterment recently harvested at a loss?"

Since Truthifi pulls data straight from your institutions, there's little manual upkeep: balances and transactions across your connected accounts are normalized and reconciled, giving your AI clean, consistent data to work from. In terms of scope, Truthifi's role is investments, net worth, and data that spans your accounts. Automated rebalancing and portfolio selection stay in Betterment, and you keep using it as your investing platform alongside Truthifi.

Two ways to start. Either run a free portfolio-analysis scan so Truthifi turns your connected accounts into a plain-language scorecard, or link them to the AI assistant you already use and ask questions in plain English. Connecting your own AI assistant works on every current consumer plan, including the free ones; the full diagnostic suite is part of the paid Monitoring plan ($8.99/mo or $79.99/yr as of October 2026).

Is it safe to connect my accounts to Truthifi?

The safeguards are structural, not just promises, and while no online connection is ever completely risk-free, these protections are built into how the connection works (more detail on how Truthifi keeps your accounts secure):

  • Read-only by architecture. At your bank and broker, Truthifi's access is read-only, so it can't move money, place trades, or change a setting there. The exceptions are a handful of tools that alter data within Truthifi itself, such as adding or deleting manually tracked assets and running an on-demand refresh.

  • Credentials don't pass through Truthifi. By design, your login is encrypted in your browser and passed straight to the aggregator (Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts), which returns a read-only token.

  • Every request logged. You get per-tool daily and monthly counts of what each AI assistant accessed, useful for your own oversight.

  • Bank-grade encryption in transit and at rest, and you control access per account: revoke it anytime in your assistant's connector settings, or inside Truthifi via Connections → Agents → Revoke.

How to connect your accounts to your AI assistant

Expect about three minutes from signup to your first question; you'll need an MCP-capable assistant that supports custom connectors.

  • Create a free Truthifi account at truthifi.com, no credit card for the free tier.

  • Link your accounts: your Betterment automated portfolio and IRAs, plus any 401(k), taxable brokerage, savings, or checking accounts you hold elsewhere, through Truthifi's secure Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts connection.

  • Turn on MCP access: creating an account and running a portfolio-analysis scan is free; connecting your accounts to a live AI assistant (MCP) works on every current consumer plan, including free ones; the full diagnostic suite is part of the paid Monitoring plan ($8.99/mo or $79.99/yr as of October 2026).

  • Add Truthifi to your assistant. The connector URL is the same everywhere: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. In your assistant, open its connector settings (usually Settings → Connectors), add a custom connector named Truthifi, paste the URL, and authorize. (Most assistants require a paid plan for custom connectors. For exact, step-by-step setup for your specific assistant, see the connect guides, also linked below.)

  • Turn it on and ask: "What's my total all-in fee across my connected accounts, and am I on track to retire?"

What you can ask your AI

For more on phrasing these, see how to ask your AI about your real investment accounts.

  • "What's my net worth across my connected accounts today?"

  • "What am I paying in total management and fund fees across Betterment and my other accounts, and what does that cost me over 10 years at 7% growth?"

  • "Will I be ready to retire at 60 at my current savings and investment rate? Model conservative, moderate, and optimistic cases."

  • "Where am I most concentrated, by holding, sector, and account, and is any of it a risk I didn't intend?"

  • "How does my Betterment automated portfolio overlap with my 401(k) and taxable brokerage holdings?"

  • "Stress-test my whole portfolio against a 2008-style drop: how far would I fall, and how long to recover?"

  • "If I increase my monthly Betterment contribution by $300, what does that do to my net worth over 10 and 20 years?"

  • "Find any duplicate or overlapping ETF holdings across my connected accounts that I didn't realize I had."

Common questions about Betterment

Is Betterment worth it? According to Betterment's pricing page (reviewed October 6, 2026), automated investing is listed at 0.25% annually; on a $100,000 balance, that works out to $250 a year, and the page sets out when other fees or tiers apply. The fee is easier to justify if you'd otherwise skip rebalancing, rarely harvest losses yourself, or hold enough in taxable accounts for harvesting to matter. It's harder to justify if you'd hold one or two index funds and rebalance once a year, since Betterment's self-directed investing carries no management fee. Either way, that fee is one line in a bigger bill; adding Truthifi shows your AI what you pay across Betterment and your other connected accounts.

What do people say about Betterment? The NerdWallet and Investopedia reviews, along with Reddit and Trustpilot threads we read on October 6, 2026, keep returning to one tradeoff: automation versus control. In our reading, reviewers credit the automated portfolios with handling the mechanics, while some want more customization at lower tiers. We don't quote star ratings here because they shift often; check each source for its current score. Beyond Betterment's own dashboard, some users connect their accounts to an AI assistant through Truthifi to see how the automated portfolio interacts with everything else they hold.

Are there alternatives to Betterment? Other automated investing platforms and robo-advisors exist. But if what you want is an AI that sees your whole financial life, your automated portfolio and your 401(k), taxable accounts, and savings, that's a connector like Truthifi. It sits on top of the accounts you already have, alongside whatever investing platform you keep.

Does Betterment have a public API? Betterment does not offer a public consumer-facing API, based on our October 6, 2026 review. Integrations are handled through third-party data aggregators, which is the same mechanism Truthifi uses to bring your Betterment data to your AI.

Do I need to write code to set up Truthifi? No. The entire Truthifi setup runs in your browser, no command line, API keys, or config files.

Which AI assistants does Truthifi work with? Truthifi is built for MCP-capable AI assistants that support custom connectors. The connector URL (https://api.truthifi.com/mcp) is the same whichever assistant you use.

Truthifi and your accounts beyond Betterment

Betterment reports clearly on the accounts it holds. By design, that view covers one slice of your financial life; the rest of your household, from held-away retirement accounts to a spouse's brokerage to accounts at other institutions, sits outside it. The costliest blind spots tend to sit right where Betterment's automation meets those outside accounts: a harvested loss undone by a similar fund bought elsewhere, a large-cap position doubled across two portfolios, a fund fee on a statement you rarely open. As your accounts and providers change over time, that connected view can grow with you, keeping your AI current as new accounts join the ones you already track.

Keep going

The short version

Betterment automates your investing. To give your AI assistant your whole financial picture, your true all-in cost, tax efficiency, and portfolio concentration across Betterment and your other accounts, connect them with Truthifi. Free to start, about three minutes, no code. Connect your accounts to your AI → Once you're connected, a sharp first question is one Betterment alone can't answer: did an account it can't see buy something close to a fund it just harvested?
