Morningstar MCP: Add Your Whole Financial Picture to Your AI

By Truthifi Bot, Truthifi's research engine · Reviewed by the Truthifi Team · Updated August 27, 2026

If you're an advisor who leans on Morningstar for fund research, ratings, and portfolio analytics, and you want your AI assistant to reason about your actual client holdings alongside that research, there are now two distinct layers to understand. Morningstar ships its own MCP server, built for research data. And separately, there's the question of whether your AI can see your whole book across custodians and held-away accounts, in one read-only place it can reason about. Get started with Truthifi

We built Truthifi to be that second layer, and knowing how the two jobs differ helps you get more out of the setup. If you're an individual investor who uses Morningstar for your own fund research, the same idea applies to your household's accounts; this guide is written for advisors, but the read-only connection works the same way.

Even with precise Morningstar ratings in front of you, a client's outside-custody concentration, such as a held-away 401(k) or inherited brokerage account, can sit outside that view and change the household's real picture. That gap isn't a failure of the research: the full portfolio lives across custodians and logins that don't connect to each other. Once those accounts sit where your AI can read them, a household-level question can be answered in plain language instead of being stitched together from separate logins.

What is an MCP?

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is the connection standard that lets an AI assistant reach your data directly. Instead of exporting CSVs or pasting figures into a chat window, your AI assistant reads live through a connection you grant, and you can revoke it anytime. Anthropic introduced the standard and kept it open, OpenAI and other companies have since adopted it, and more AI assistants support it as a result. A "Morningstar MCP" means a connector that feeds Morningstar's data to your AI assistant this way, and, as we'll see, Morningstar has built one. For how Truthifi's own server works, see Truthifi MCP.

Does Morningstar have an MCP server?

Yes, Morningstar has its own MCP server, built and maintained at the company level. The repo Morningstar/morningstar-mcp-server lives under the official Morningstar GitHub organization, according to the organization's public repository listing, which means this is a company-shipped integration, not a community workaround.1

A few things worth knowing about what it is and isn't:

  • The original GitHub repo (Morningstar/morningstar-mcp-server) was archived by Morningstar on September 16, 2025, with a note that development on the server moved outside it. Morningstar now points developers to a hosted MCP server at https://mcp.morningstar.com/mcp, which enterprise admins can add as a remote connector.

  • Based on Morningstar's product suite, its MCP is most naturally scoped to Morningstar's own research and ratings data, fund star ratings, Medalist ratings, equity research, ESG scores, and similar data Morningstar licenses and publishes.

  • It is not a cross-custodian aggregation layer. It surfaces what Morningstar knows about investments, not what your clients actually hold across Fidelity, Schwab, Pershing, and three outside brokerages.

That distinction matters for advisors. A request like "show me my whole book, including the held-away accounts, and tell me where concentration risk is highest" is a different job and a different layer.

About Morningstar

Morningstar is one of the most widely recognized names in investment research and data.1 Founded in 1984 by Joe Mansueto and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the company is publicly traded on NASDAQ (MORN) and operates globally, according to Morningstar's own site and its NASDAQ listing. Advisors and institutions know Morningstar for:

  • Investment research and ratings: the Morningstar Rating (star ratings) and Morningstar Medalist Rating for mutual funds and ETFs are widely used reference points for advisors evaluating funds.

  • Portfolio analytics and risk modeling: Morningstar Direct and Morningstar Advisor Workstation deliver performance analytics, asset allocation tools, and risk modeling for professional users.

  • Independent equity research: fair value estimates, economic moat assessments, and analyst coverage across thousands of individual stocks.

  • ESG and sustainability ratings: Morningstar Sustainability Ratings and Low Carbon Designations across funds and companies.

  • Data licensing and APIs: the Morningstar Data API and Morningstar Direct API provide institutional and enterprise access to Morningstar's data infrastructure, contract-based.

About Morningstar: founded 1984 · headquartered in Chicago, Illinois · publicly traded (NASDAQ: MORN) · operates in multiple countries; see Morningstar's most recent annual report for the current count. Specifics change, confirm current capabilities at morningstar.com.

Morningstar does the heavy lifting on research depth and fund-level analytics. What lives elsewhere is a unified, AI-readable view of what clients actually hold across custodians, including accounts outside Morningstar's ecosystem.

Morningstar API: getting your Morningstar data for AI

Does Morningstar have an API? Not a public one for your own account data. Morningstar offers the Morningstar Data API and Morningstar Direct API for institutional/enterprise clients, according to Morningstar's own site. Connecting Morningstar through Truthifi gives your AI assistant read-only, programmatic access to your Morningstar account data over MCP (the Model Context Protocol). That makes it the practical "Morningstar API" for AI, with no code and no official Morningstar API required. Your assistant can query balances, holdings, and transactions across Morningstar and your other connected accounts in one view. Connect your book to your AI →

How Truthifi can help

Morningstar is a premier source of investment research and ratings, and Truthifi is the complementary read-only, cross-institution layer. The two are genuinely additive: Morningstar tells your AI what a fund is rated; Truthifi shows your AI how your clients' actual holdings across custodians stack up, decoded, normalized, and surfaced in one place. According to Truthifi's own State of Financial Data report (request it), its pipeline applies hundreds of distinct correction and enrichment types across accounts, securities, holdings and transactions. That company-reported scope shows how much normalization cross-custodian reasoning requires.

Truthifi links your book to your AI assistant and brings the whole picture into one read-only view it can reason about: client accounts across 18,000+ institutions, decoded into clean, normalized data rather than raw feeds, from an independent source with no commissions, no ads, no advice. It also runs 130+ automated diagnostics (portfolio-health checks) across each client's holdings, so your AI works from reconciled numbers. Once Morningstar's research sits alongside the rest of your book, you can ask your AI assistant book-level and per-client questions like these:

  • "Across my whole book, which clients are most concentrated in a single stock or sector, counting held-away accounts?"

  • "Show held-away assets my clients hold outside my primary custodian that I'm not seeing in my main view."

  • "Which clients are paying the most in total fees across my connected accounts, not just what I manage?"

  • "Flag allocation drift over 5% from target across all households this quarter."

Here's where the gap tends to show up in a Morningstar workflow. An advisor screens funds in Morningstar Direct, favors Medalist-rated picks for the managed book, and checks style exposure in Advisor Workstation. Their clients also hold employer 401(k)s, rollover IRAs at outside brokerages, and taxable accounts the advisor didn't open. Those outside accounts can hold the same fund families or single stocks the managed book already favors, and a fund rating isn't designed to flag that overlap. Connect the held-away accounts through Truthifi, then ask the AI "where is my book concentrated when you count everything?" If outside positions overlap with the managed book, the answer can differ from what the managed accounts alone suggest.

A practical way to use both: pull a fund's Morningstar rating and category through Morningstar's own tools, then ask your AI how much of each household's total, held-away included, already sits in that fund or category. The rating tells you whether the fund is worth owning. The holdings layer tells you how much of it the client already owns.

Two entry points. Let Truthifi produce a decoded, cross-custodian read of your book, or connect the AI assistant you already use for live questions across your connected client accounts, read-only, on a paid Truthifi Advisor plan (see truthifi.com/pricing).

Is it safe to connect my book to Truthifi?

Yes, by design: Truthifi's access to your bank and brokerage accounts is read-only. Your AI assistant gets a sign-in token from Truthifi rather than your password, and you can revoke access anytime under Connections → Agents → Revoke. These safeguards are built into the connection itself, not just promised, though no online connection is completely risk-free.

  • Read-only by architecture. Truthifi can't move money, place trades, or change a setting at your institutions, the constraint lives in the connection, not the terms of service. The only writes happen inside Truthifi, such as editing manually tracked assets.

  • Credentials don't pass through Truthifi. Your login is encrypted the moment you type it and goes directly to the aggregator, which hands back only a read-only token.

  • Requests logged. You get per-tool daily and monthly counts of what each AI assistant accessed, useful for your own oversight.

Truthifi adds to your own compliance, recordkeeping and custody systems. It doesn't replace them. The read-only architecture limits what the connection can do, and it isn't a substitute for your firm's own compliance review of that data.

How to connect your book to your AI assistant

No command line needed, the setup happens in your browser, on MCP-capable assistants.

  • Create a Truthifi account at truthifi.com.

  • Link the accounts you want your AI assistant to see: your clients' accounts across custodians, plus held-away accounts they hold elsewhere, through Truthifi's secure connection, where supported.

  • Turn on MCP access: live, read-only AI access runs on a paid Truthifi Advisor plan, see truthifi.com/pricing for current pricing.

  • Add Truthifi to your assistant. The connector URL is the same in each assistant: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. In your assistant, open its connector settings (usually Settings → Connectors), add a custom connector named Truthifi, paste the URL, and authorize.

  • Turn it on and ask: "Across my whole book, where is concentration or held-away exposure highest right now?"

What you can ask your AI

  • "Across every household, which clients are most concentrated in one position or sector, counting held-away accounts?"

  • "Total fees by client across all connected accounts this year, show the biggest outliers."

  • "Which households have drifted more than 5% from their target allocation this quarter?"

  • "Show me idle cash over $50k across all custodians, by client."

  • "For this client, compare what I manage against their held-away accounts and flag any overlapping exposure."

  • "Where across my book is there single-stock concentration I might be underestimating because it's in an outside account?"

Common questions about Morningstar and AI

Morningstar has its own MCP server. What does that mean for me? Morningstar's org-owned MCP server (Morningstar/morningstar-mcp-server) is built for Morningstar's research and ratings data. It's a company-level integration, which is a meaningful signal of direction. Its scope appears oriented toward fund ratings, equity research, and related content, not cross-custodian aggregation of what your clients actually hold. Truthifi is the complementary layer for that cross-account, whole-book view, spanning custodians and held-away accounts where supported.

Does Truthifi replace Morningstar Direct or Advisor Workstation? No. Morningstar Direct and Advisor Workstation handle research, fund analytics and portfolio modeling, while Truthifi is the additive, read-only context layer your AI assistant reads across the custodians and held-away accounts it connects to. They do different jobs, so advisors can keep using Morningstar's tools as they already do.

Can the AI place trades or change anything? No. Truthifi is read-only by architecture, so your AI assistant can't trade, move money, bill or change a setting on any connected account. It can only read the data you connect, and every request it makes is logged for your own oversight.

What about held-away assets my clients have outside my managed book? That's a common reason advisors connect Truthifi. Held-away and outside-custody accounts a client holds elsewhere are read directly through the aggregator connection (where supported). Your AI can then factor them into concentration, fee, and allocation analysis alongside the accounts you manage.

Do I need to write code to set up Truthifi? No. The entire Truthifi setup runs in your browser, no command line, API keys, or configuration files required.

Which AI assistants does Truthifi work with? Truthifi is built to work with MCP-capable assistants. The connector URL is the same in each one: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. For step-by-step setup on specific assistants, see the connect guides linked below.

Is Truthifi's data connected to Morningstar's ratings? Truthifi and Morningstar are separate products that do different jobs. Truthifi aggregates your clients' actual account holdings across custodians; Morningstar provides research and ratings on the investments themselves. An advisor's AI can draw on both, Morningstar's MCP for research context and Truthifi for the cross-account, whole-book holdings layer.

Where Truthifi fits alongside Morningstar

Morningstar's research and analytics layer is built to tell you what investments are worth looking at and how they're rated. It's deep on research and fund-level data, but the client's complete household across custodians, including held-away accounts outside the managed book, sits beyond what a single-platform tool typically sees. Truthifi is the complementary layer: a decoded, normalized view of the accounts connected to the advisor's own Truthifi login, which the advisor can share with their AI assistant. Truthifi's access to your bank and brokerage accounts stays read-only, and it doesn't touch trading, billing, CRM or custody. A few tools do change data inside Truthifi itself, like adding or deleting manually tracked assets or running an on-demand refresh, which costs 3 credits.

Keep going

The short version

Morningstar runs your research and analytics. Its own MCP server brings that research data to your AI assistant. To give your AI your whole book, your custodians plus the held-away accounts clients hold elsewhere, connect with Truthifi: read-only, decoded, additive to Morningstar, not a replacement for it. A useful first test once both layers are connected: take one Medalist-rated fund you already favor and ask how much of it each household holds, held-away accounts included. The households where that number surprises you are a reasonable place to start your next review. Connect your book to your AI →
