To get useful answers about your money from an AI assistant, not generic advice, you have to connect your real accounts to it. If you build or trade on Alpaca, you can already have your AI place trades through Alpaca's own MCP. Here's how that works today, and how to add the missing half, a read-only, whole-picture view of your positions, costs, and risk across your connected accounts, so your AI can answer "should I?" before it answers "place the order." No code, free to start.

The harder question usually lives across separate logins: given everything you hold, is this a good idea? That answer is far easier to reach when your accounts are in one place your AI can reason about. Get started with Truthifi

What is an MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant like yours securely connect to outside data, such as your Alpaca account. With your permission, the assistant reads that data live. Instead of copy-pasting numbers or uploading statements, it pulls current data through a connection you control and can switch off anytime. Introduced by Anthropic and since adopted by OpenAI and others, MCP is supported by a growing range of AI assistants. An "Alpaca MCP" means a connector that lets your AI work with your Alpaca data this way.

Does Alpaca have an MCP server?

Yes, Alpaca has its own MCP, built for trade execution.

According to Alpaca's GitHub org, alpacahq/alpaca-mcp-server is its official MCP server for AI-driven trading.1 It lets an AI place trades in stocks, ETFs, crypto, and options, run data analysis, and build strategies in plain English. A handful of community servers exist too, laukikk/alpaca-mcp, tedlikeskix/alpaca-mcp-server, and wlu03/alpaca-mcp-server, each authenticating with an Alpaca API key.

Two things to know about what these servers are designed to do:

  • They're execution-focused: they let your AI place orders and query your Alpaca portfolio.

  • By design, they see only what's inside Alpaca. Alpaca's MCP reads your Alpaca account through its API key, so a strategy running there has no view of a Roth IRA held at another custodian, a Coinbase wallet, or how a new position shifts your overall allocation.

That second part is where adding Truthifi to your setup comes in. It's a read-only, whole-picture layer that sits alongside Alpaca's execution MCP, not in front of it (learn more). If everything you own sits inside Alpaca, its own MCP may already cover what you need; Truthifi adds the most once you hold accounts elsewhere.

What Alpaca does

Alpaca is a developer-first brokerage and market-data platform, the infrastructure other apps and traders build on, according to its public documentation (2025).1 It's designed for:

  • Commission-free trading via API: US equities and crypto over REST and WebSocket, for retail and institutional developers.

  • Embedded brokerage (Broker API): fintechs can offer investing to their own users under Alpaca's broker-dealer license.

  • Market data: real-time and historical feeds for stocks, options, and crypto via the Market Data API.

  • Paper trading: a sandbox to test strategies without real capital.

  • Options trading: an options API for live order flow.

Good to know about Alpaca

Quick answers to common questions, with Alpaca's own resources:2

  • What does it cost? According to Alpaca's public pricing pages at the time of review, live and paper trading run on a free tier with commission-free US equity trades. Market data has a free IEX feed and paid real-time tiers; Broker API pricing for embedded brokerage is negotiated directly. Tiers change, so confirm current numbers on Alpaca's pricing and API docs.

  • How do I authenticate the MCP? The official server and the community servers listed above authenticate with an Alpaca API key.

  • What about high-volatility events? Any API platform relies on aggregators and feeds that can be rate-limited or busy when markets move fast; Alpaca publishes its API references and status resources to help you plan around it.

  • Where is it available? Access is restricted in some countries; check Alpaca's documentation for your region.

  • What about everything outside Alpaca? Your other brokerage, retirement, and crypto accounts live in different places, and seeing them together with Alpaca in one view is where a read-only connector adds the most.

Alpaca API: getting your Alpaca data for AI

Does Alpaca have an API? Yes, it publishes a full developer API. Beyond that API, connecting Alpaca through Truthifi gives your AI assistant read-only, programmatic access to your Alpaca account data over MCP (the Model Context Protocol). That's the practical "Alpaca API" for AI: no code and no official Alpaca API required. Your assistant can query balances, holdings, and transactions across Alpaca and your other connected accounts in one view. Connect your accounts to your AI →

How Truthifi can help

Truthifi links your real accounts to your AI assistant and brings your whole financial picture into one view your AI can reason about. Truthifi reports coverage of accounts at 18,000+ institutions (its own figure, reviewed October 6, 2026).2 The data arrives decoded into clean data rather than a raw feed. Truthifi is independent: it doesn't earn commissions or run ads, and it doesn't give advice. Along the way, Truthifi's Refinery corrects and reconciles what it reads, so your AI works from reconciled numbers rather than raw ones. For your investment accounts, Truthifi reports running 130+ automated diagnostics, portfolio-health checks run against your holdings and account data, per Truthifi's own figures.2 It also reconciles each holding with synthetic share accounting, which tracks an account the way a fund tracks units: a deposit buys new units instead of registering as a gain, and a withdrawal sells units instead of registering as a loss. That separates the money you added from what your investments actually earned. Alpaca's MCP handles execution inside its own ecosystem; Truthifi is the complementary read-only, whole-portfolio intelligence layer and doesn't touch order routing. With it connected, you can ask:

  • "What's my net worth across my connected accounts right now?"

  • "Am I on track to retire, and what's dragging on my returns?"

  • "Which of my investments cost the most in fees?"

  • "Where am I most concentrated, and is that a risk?"

Take a developer whose momentum bot graduated from Alpaca's paper-trading sandbox to a live account through the Trading API. The bot's API key sees fills, positions, and buying power in that one Alpaca account; it has no view of the Roth IRA at another custodian or the crypto on Coinbase the same developer holds. Answering "given all of it, can I retire at 62?" still means opening three separate logins. With those accounts connected, you can ask your AI to check something the bot can't: whether the index fund held in that Roth IRA already overlaps the tech names the strategy keeps buying on Alpaca.

With Alpaca's execution MCP and Truthifi's whole-picture layer both in front of your AI, the two work together. Real examples:

  • "My strategy wants to add to a tech position on Alpaca, across my connected accounts, how concentrated in tech would that leave me?"

  • "Before I place this order, stress-test my whole portfolio, including this trade, against a 2008-style drop."

  • "Given everything I hold, am I on track to retire by 60, and what's the fee drag across everything I've connected?"

Because Truthifi typically reads directly from your institutions, there's little upkeep on your side. The most useful accuracy test is your own: check whether your AI's answers match your statements. For context, Truthifi's State of Financial Data report (request a copy) puts its data accuracy at 99.7% across its community dataset; that is Truthifi's own measurement, not an independent audit. On scope: Truthifi covers investments, net worth, and whole-picture intelligence, while order execution stays in Alpaca. A simple routing rule follows: if a request involves placing an order, it goes to Alpaca; if it involves weighing that order against everything else you hold, it goes to Truthifi.

Two ways to start. Run a free portfolio-analysis scan and let Truthifi turn your connected accounts into a plain-language scorecard, or connect them to the AI assistant you already use and ask in plain English. Both start on the free tier; the setup steps below spell out what the paid Monitoring plan adds.

With & Without Truthifi

A single-broker connector like Alpaca's gets that one account into your AI, and for trade execution, that's genuinely useful. Truthifi is the layer on top: it turns those raw feeds into verified, household-level truth your AI can reason on.

Is it safe to connect my accounts to Truthifi?

The safeguards are structural, not just promises. No online connection is ever completely risk-free, but these protections are built into how the connection works:

  • Read-only by architecture. Truthifi can't move money, place trades, or change a setting. The constraint lives in the connection, not the terms of service.

  • Credentials never pass through Truthifi. Your login is encrypted in your browser and passed straight to the aggregator (Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts), which returns a read-only token.

  • Every request logged. You get per-tool daily and monthly counts of what each AI assistant accessed, useful for your own oversight.

  • Bank-grade encryption in transit and at rest, and you control access per account, revoke it anytime, in your assistant's connector settings or inside Truthifi (Connections → Agents → Revoke).

More detail: see how Truthifi keeps your accounts secure.

How to connect your accounts to your AI assistant

The whole setup runs in your browser, no command line, on MCP-capable assistants that support custom connectors.

  • Create a free Truthifi account at truthifi.com, no credit card for the free tier.

  • Link your accounts: your brokerage, retirement, bank, and crypto accounts, through Truthifi's secure Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts connection.

  • Turn on MCP access: creating an account, running a portfolio-analysis scan, and connecting your own AI assistant are available on every current consumer plan, including free ones. The full diagnostic suite (fee breakdowns, benchmarks, concentration and exposure analysis) is part of the paid Monitoring plan ($8.99/mo or $79.99/yr as of October 2026).

  • Add Truthifi to your assistant. The connector URL is the same everywhere: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. In your assistant, open its connector settings (usually Settings → Connectors), add a custom connector named Truthifi, paste the URL, and authorize. (Most assistants require a paid plan for custom connectors. For exact, step-by-step setup for your specific assistant, see the connect guides.)

  • Turn it on and ask: "What's my net worth, and am I on track to retire?"

What you can ask your AI

  • "What's my net worth across my connected accounts today, Alpaca included?"

  • "Am I on track to retire at my current savings rate? Model conservative, moderate, and optimistic cases."

  • "Total up the fund and trading fees I'm paying across my connected accounts this year, and show the 10-year cost at 7% growth."

  • "Where am I most concentrated, by holding, sector, and single account, and is any of it a risk?"

  • "Stress-test my whole portfolio against a 2008-style drop: how far would I fall, and how long to recover?"

  • "Find any duplicate or overlapping holdings across my accounts that I didn't realize I had."

  • "How much of my net worth is in crypto versus equities right now?"

  • "I want to move $5,000 into investing, show the effect on my net worth over 10 and 20 years."

Common questions about Alpaca

Is Alpaca worth it? For developers who want commission-free, API-first trading and market data, Alpaca's free paper-trading sandbox is the way to check whether its developer-first model fits how you work. If your real question is "am I building wealth across everything I hold," that's a whole-portfolio view; adding Truthifi brings it into your AI alongside your Alpaca positions.

Does Alpaca have an MCP server? Yes, Alpaca's own org ships alpacahq/alpaca-mcp-server, an official MCP for executing trades and querying your Alpaca account in plain English. It reads only what's inside Alpaca; pairing it with a read-only connector like Truthifi adds the cross-institution view a single-broker MCP doesn't cover.

Are there alternatives to Alpaca? Other brokerage and data platforms exist, but if what you actually want is an AI that sees more of your financial life than one broker's slice, that's a read-only connector like Truthifi sitting alongside whatever execution platform you use, including Alpaca.

What do people say about Alpaca? In the public developer discussion we reviewed, on Reddit's r/algotrading, Trustpilot, and GitHub, Alpaca comes up mainly as an API-first platform for algorithmic and bot-driven trading. Individual experiences vary, so read recent threads and reviews directly rather than relying on any single summary, including ours.

Do I need to write code to set up Truthifi? No. The entire Truthifi setup runs in your browser, no command line, API keys, or config files. (Alpaca's own MCP is a separate, developer-oriented setup; Truthifi's whole-picture layer is not.)

Which AI assistants does Truthifi work with? MCP-capable assistants that support custom connectors. MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic and adopted by OpenAI and others, and a growing range of assistants use the same Truthifi connector URL.

Truthifi and the data layer

Alpaca's endpoints return what one brokerage knows: fills, positions, buying power, and quotes, streamed over REST and WebSocket so a bot can act within milliseconds. That plumbing works, but what it hands off is the raw input, Encoded the way the institutions wrote it. Truthifi is the complementary layer that makes it Decoded, Verified, and yours. Positions are named and fees identified across your connected accounts, reconciled by Truthifi's Refinery, and refreshed automatically once a day into one whole-picture foundation your AI can reason over. In practice, an order your Alpaca strategy is about to send can be weighed against holdings Alpaca never sees.

The short version

Alpaca's MCP lets your AI execute trades inside Alpaca. To let that same AI answer "should I?" first, with a read-only, whole-picture view of your positions, costs, and risk across your connected accounts, connect your accounts with Truthifi. One habit worth building: before a strategy's first live order, ask your AI how that position changes your allocation across everything you've connected, then let Alpaca execute.
