Without access to your accounts, an AI assistant is guessing about your money from whatever you type into the chat. For payroll, most of what it needs to see sits in transaction data. Each Gusto pay run usually lands in your bank as a deposit, and whether your AI reads that deposit as income or mislabels it comes down to parsing. If you run payroll on Gusto, it already handles what gets paid out: net pay, tax withholdings, benefits deductions. But what those numbers mean for the rest of your financial life (your bank balance, your retirement contributions, your debt, your investments) lives somewhere else entirely. Here's how to give your AI assistant the whole picture, so what Gusto pays out is decoded right alongside everything else. No code, free to start. Get started with Truthifi

If you've ever looked at a Gusto paystub, seen the net number, and still couldn't answer the bigger question, am I actually building wealth, after taxes and deductions?, it's not you. The pieces needed to answer it sit behind separate logins. Bringing them together lets your AI finally connect the dots.

  1. Create a free Truthifi account. Register at truthifi.com; the free tier needs no credit card.

  2. Link your accounts. Connect the bank where your Gusto net pay lands, plus brokerage, retirement and loan accounts via Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts. Your logins go to the aggregator, not to Truthifi.

  3. Turn on MCP access. Every current consumer plan supports connecting your own AI assistant via MCP, free ones included.

  4. Add Truthifi to your assistant. In your AI assistant's connector settings, add a custom connector pointing at https://api.truthifi.com/mcp, then authorize.

  5. Turn it on and ask. Switch Truthifi on, then ask: What's my net worth, and am I on track to retire?

What is an MCP?

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant securely connect to outside data and read it live. It acts only with your say-so. Instead of pasting in numbers or uploading statements, the assistant reads data through a connection you control, refreshed automatically once a day, and can turn off whenever you want. Introduced by Anthropic and since adopted by OpenAI and others, the open standard is now supported by a growing range of AI assistants. A "Gusto MCP" just means a connector that feeds payroll-related data to your AI this way. Truthifi's own MCP server works on the same standard.

Does Gusto have an MCP server?

No official one for your own payroll data. Gusto's developer documentation centers on app integrations, according to Gusto's developer docs, rather than on feeding one employer's paystubs to a personal AI assistant. What Truthifi offers instead is read-only access to the bank, brokerage and card accounts you connect to Truthifi, so your assistant can reason about your whole financial picture alongside Gusto.

That leaves a gap. Truthifi does not read Gusto itself, so payroll detail such as gross pay or a pre-tax 401(k) deduction comes from your paystub, or from you. What Truthifi adds is the other side of the ledger: where that net pay lands and what it becomes, in one decoded view your AI can reason about (below, or learn more).

What Gusto does

Gusto is an all-in-one payroll, benefits, and HR platform built for US small and mid-sized businesses.1 For a small employer, that breaks down into six jobs:

  • Automated payroll: runs payroll with tax calculation and filing for US businesses.

  • Employee onboarding: self-service portals and custom onboarding checklists.

  • Benefits administration: health insurance and benefits, with no extra broker fee.

  • Time tracking & hiring: time tracking that syncs to payroll, plus applicant tracking tools.

  • Contractors & EOR: full-time and contractor payments, international contractor payments, and Employer-of-Record for Canada via a Remote partnership.

  • Compliance & advisory: compliance alerts and HR advisory on higher-tier plans, plus S-corp reasonable-salary support for solopreneurs via Gusto Solo.

On pricing, Gusto starts at the Simple plan: $49/month base + $6/month per person, as listed on Gusto's site (2026), with Plus and Premium tiers adding more HR, compliance, and benefits features. There's no charge until your first payroll runs, and a lower-cost contractor-only plan is available. (Pricing)

About Gusto: founded in 2011 by Joshua Reeves, Tomer London, and Edward Kim · headquartered in San Francisco, CA, with an operations hub in Denver, CO · independent and privately held.

Good to know about Gusto

Quick answers to what people ask most, with Gusto's own resources:2

  • What does it cost? The Simple plan is $49/month plus $6/month per person; Plus and Premium tiers add HR, compliance, and benefits features. No charge until your first payroll runs. (Pricing)

  • Does it handle benefits? Yes, health insurance and benefits administration are built in, with no extra broker fee.

  • Can it pay contractors and international workers? It handles US full-time and contractor payments, international contractor payments, and Employer-of-Record for Canada via a Remote partnership. Core payroll is US-focused.

  • What about S-corp owners? Gusto Solo supports reasonable-salary compliance for solopreneurs.

  • Where do my investments and net worth fit in? Your retirement contributions, brokerage holdings, and net worth live in different places than your payroll, and seeing them together is where an AI connector adds the most.

A payroll platform isn't built to answer that last question, and it's where adding Truthifi alongside Gusto helps.

Gusto API: getting your Gusto data for AI

Does Gusto have an API? Not a public one for your own account data: Gusto's API is documented for app integrations, according to Gusto's developer docs. Connecting through Truthifi gives your AI assistant read-only, programmatic access to the bank, brokerage and card accounts you connect to Truthifi. It works over MCP, so think of it as the practical "Gusto API" for AI: no code, and no official Gusto API required. Your assistant can query balances, holdings, and transactions across your connected accounts in one view. Connect your accounts to your AI →

How Truthifi can help

Truthifi pulls your linked accounts into a single view and checks them for fees, concentration and other issues. Your AI can reason about accounts at any of 18,000+ institutions (per Truthifi platform data), decoded into clean data rather than a raw feed, from an independent source with no commissions, no ads and no advice. As it goes, Truthifi's Refinery reconciles and corrects the data it reads. Truthifi reports 99.7% accuracy for that work; it's a self-reported figure, not an independent audit, so it's worth spot-checking against your own statements. Once that's connected, here's what you can ask:

  • "Across everything I've linked, where does my net worth stand right now?"

  • "Am I on pace to retire, and what's weighing down my returns?"

  • "Which investments of mine are costing the most in fees?"

  • "Looking past my paycheck, where's my money most concentrated, and should that worry me?"

On scope: Gusto runs your payroll, benefits, and HR in your setup; Truthifi is the complementary read-only, whole-picture, decoded layer. Truthifi doesn't replace or connect Gusto itself; it reads the bank, investment, retirement, and loan accounts that give your payroll context.

Net pay is also where an AI that reads only your checking account can plausibly go wrong. It sees the net deposit, after withholdings and pre-tax deductions are already gone. Ask it for your savings rate and it can undercount, because a 401(k) deduction taken through payroll doesn't pass through checking. It shows up in the retirement account instead, which is why linking that account matters as much as linking the bank.

Yes, as a deposit, if that bank is linked

S-corp owner distributions

Business checking, with no paystub attached

Yes, as a transfer, if business checking is linked

Gusto Solo's reasonable-salary support shows why that table matters. For an S-corp owner, Gusto runs the W-2 salary and withholdings, but owner distributions typically move into business checking with no paystub attached. Say that owner also holds a SEP-IRA at one brokerage, a business checking account at one bank, and a personal taxable account somewhere else. Then "after my reasonable salary, distributions and taxes, am I actually on track to retire?" usually means opening three separate logins plus the Gusto dashboard. Once those accounts are connected to Truthifi, a single question to the AI can pull the answer together. Linking another account could then surface things the separate logins hid, such as a retirement contribution that wasn't being maximized or a fee that was easy to miss on a statement.

With your payroll picture in your head and your financial accounts in front of your AI, the two start working together. A few real examples:

  • "My Gusto Solo paystub covers my reasonable salary, and the rest of my profit comes out as distributions. Given my spending and investments, how much of those distributions can I move into my SEP-IRA?"

  • "After payroll taxes and benefits deductions, what's my real take-home savings rate across my connected accounts?"

  • "If I bump my SEP-IRA contribution by $500/month, what does that do to my net worth over 10 years?"

Because Truthifi reads your bank, retirement and brokerage accounts directly, upkeep is light: mostly re-authenticating a connection when an institution asks you to. It also reconciles the balances and transactions sitting alongside your Gusto paychecks, so your AI works from clean, consistent numbers.

Start free. Link your accounts and run a portfolio-analysis scan at no cost. Paid Monitoring ($8.99/mo or $79.99/yr as of October 2026) unlocks fee breakdowns, benchmarks and concentration/exposure analysis.

How to connect your accounts to your AI assistant

The entire setup runs in your browser, no command line, with any MCP-capable assistant.

  • Set up a free Truthifi account at truthifi.com; the free tier needs no credit card.

  • Link your accounts: the bank where your Gusto net pay lands, plus brokerage, retirement, and loan accounts, through Truthifi's secure Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts connection.

  • Turn on MCP access: creating an account, running a portfolio-analysis scan, and connecting your own AI assistant are available on every current consumer plan, including free ones; the full diagnostic suite (fee breakdowns, benchmarks, concentration/exposure analysis) is part of the paid Monitoring plan ($8.99/mo or $79.99/yr as of October 2026).

  • Add Truthifi to your assistant. Whatever payroll or other tools you run alongside it, the Truthifi connector URL stays the same: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. Open your assistant's connector settings, usually under Settings → Connectors, add a custom connector called Truthifi, paste that URL in, and authorize. (Most assistants require a paid plan for custom connectors. The connect guides walk through exact setup steps for your specific assistant.)

  • Switch it on, then ask: "What's my net worth, and am I on track to retire?"

What you can ask your AI

  • "My net pay this month was [X], given my spending and savings, what's my real take-home rate?"

  • "As of today, what's my net worth across my connected accounts?"

  • "Is my current savings rate enough to retire on schedule? Model conservative, moderate, and optimistic cases."

  • "Total up the fund fees I'm paying across my connected accounts this year, and show the 10-year cost at 7% growth."

  • "Break down where I'm most concentrated by holding, sector, and single account, and flag if any of it is a risk."

  • "Stress-test my whole portfolio against a 2008-style drop: how far would I fall, and how long to recover?"

  • "I want to move $500/month from take-home into my SEP-IRA, show the effect on my net worth over 10 and 20 years."

  • "Spot any duplicate or overlapping holdings across my accounts that I wasn't aware of."

With & Without Truthifi

For a Gusto paycheck, a basic connector can show the net deposit landing in checking, which is useful on its own. What it can't do is reconcile that deposit against the 401(k) or SEP-IRA contributions that left your pay before it arrived. Truthifi turns those raw feeds into data your AI can reason on:

Is it safe to connect my accounts to Truthifi?

No online connection is completely risk-free, but here's what protects you. Truthifi's access to your bank and brokerage accounts is read-only, your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and you can revoke access any time under Connections → Agents → Revoke. These limits are built into the connection itself, not just written into a policy.

  • Read-only by architecture. Truthifi can't touch a dollar of your pay, place a trade, or change a setting in any account it reads.

  • Your logins go to the aggregator, not Truthifi. Your bank or brokerage login is encrypted the moment you type it and goes straight to the aggregator handling that connection (Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts), which hands back a read-only token instead.

  • Every request logged. You get per-tool daily and monthly counts of what each AI assistant accessed, useful for your own oversight.

  • Bank-grade encryption in transit and at rest, and you control access per account, revocable anytime in your assistant's connector settings or inside Truthifi.

Common questions about Gusto

Is Gusto worth it? For many small and mid-sized businesses, yes, if the all-in-one payroll, benefits, and HR setup fits: $49/month plus $6/month per person, with no charge until your first payroll runs. But "am I building wealth after taxes and deductions" calls for a whole-picture view, which Truthifi brings into your AI alongside what Gusto pays out.

What do people say about Gusto? In the public reviews and discussions we looked at, much of the conversation is about the all-in-one experience: payroll, benefits, and onboarding in one place. Some business owners also add a connector like Truthifi so their AI can see how net pay interacts with their bank, investments, and net worth.

Are there alternatives to Gusto? Other payroll platforms exist, including ADP. If what you actually want is an AI that sees your whole financial life, what payroll pays out and where it goes, that's a different tool: a connector like Truthifi sits on top of the accounts you already have, alongside whatever payroll system you keep.

Why is correcting a payroll error complicated? One pay run touches several records at once: the employee's net deposit, the tax withholdings filed on their behalf, and any benefits or retirement deductions. Fixing one figure usually means an off-cycle run or a tax amendment through the payroll system's own workflows, so pay and filed tax records stay in agreement. Once your AI is reading your accounts, Truthifi keeps the resulting bank and retirement deposits decoded and consistent across the rest of your picture.

Do I need to write code to set up Truthifi? No. The whole setup happens in your browser, so there's no command line, API keys, or config files to deal with.

Which AI assistants does Truthifi work with? Any MCP-capable assistant can connect via the same Truthifi connector URL. MCP is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic and adopted by OpenAI and others, so a growing range of assistants qualify.

Truthifi and your accounts beyond Gusto

Gusto does what it is built to do well, and reports clearly on payroll. By design, though, that view covers one slice of your financial life. Held-away retirement accounts, a spouse's brokerage, and accounts at other institutions can be added by linking them in Truthifi. Truthifi is the Universal, Transparent, Portable layer that brings your connected accounts together: one decoded, benchmarked picture across the institutions you connect, owned by you and ready for your AI. Gusto knows what you paid out. Truthifi shows where that money went, and what it's costing you once it gets there.

Keep going

The short version

Link two accounts first: the bank where your Gusto deposit lands, and the retirement account that receives your payroll 401(k) or SEP-IRA contributions. Those two links cover the savings-rate gap a checking-only view can miss. Keep your latest Gusto paystub open too, so you can give your AI gross pay and pre-tax deductions when it asks. Setup typically takes about three minutes in your browser, with no code required, and you can start free.

A useful first question for your AI: do the pre-tax deductions on your Gusto paystub, often chosen once at onboarding, still match the goals your connected accounts now show? Connect your accounts to your AI →
