Generic advice from an AI assistant isn't useful when your tax questions depend on accounts it can't see. Real answers about your money depend on real accounts connected to it. This guide covers the TurboTax AI assistant question and how to connect TurboTax to AI. If you're weighing TurboTax as part of how you stay on top of your finances, here's what's possible today. You can give your AI assistant your full financial life, your investments, your fees, and your net worth, year-round, in one place it can actually reason about, instead of scattered across separate logins. No code, free to start. Get started with Truthifi
The real tax questions (should I have done a Roth conversion, harvested losses, bunched charitable gifts?) often needed answering back in November, well before you sit down to file in April. TurboTax works from the W-2s and 1099s that arrive after the year has closed. For many filers, the decisions those forms record were made months earlier, often in accounts spread across separate logins.
Create a free Truthifi account. Create your login at truthifi.com — the free tier needs no credit card.
Link your accounts. Connect the brokerage, retirement, bank and crypto accounts behind your taxes via Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts.
Turn on MCP access. Connecting your own AI assistant via MCP works on every current consumer plan, including free ones.
Add Truthifi to your assistant. Add a custom connector with URL https://api.truthifi.com/mcp in your AI assistant's connector settings, and authorize.
Turn it on and ask. Toggle Truthifi on and ask: Before tax season, are there moves I should make across my accounts?
What is an MCP?
MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is the open standard (modelcontextprotocol.io), introduced by Anthropic and since adopted by OpenAI and others, that lets your AI assistant connect to outside data sources, like your financial accounts, and read them live, with your permission. Instead of copying numbers by hand, your assistant reads current data through a connection you set up and can turn off anytime. A "TurboTax MCP" means a connector that feeds tax-relevant financial data to your AI this way.
Does TurboTax have an MCP server?
As of our October 2026 check, according to TurboTax's public pages and a GitHub search, TurboTax does not publish an official MCP server for your consumer tax or account data.1 That could change, so treat this as a dated finding. You can still bring your financial picture to an AI assistant through Truthifi: it gives your assistant read-only access to the bank, brokerage and card accounts you connect, so it can reason alongside whatever tax software you use, TurboTax included.
That answer covers only what TurboTax itself can see. A single-provider connector, by design, has no view of the rest of your financial life, the accounts you hold everywhere else, so pairing it with a cross-account view fills that gap. Bringing the whole picture together is a different job, and it's where Truthifi fits alongside TurboTax: one read-only, decoded view across the accounts you connect that your AI can reason about (details below, or learn more).
What TurboTax does
TurboTax, made by Intuit, is guided tax-preparation software built around interview-style Q&A: it walks you through a federal and state return question by question, according to TurboTax's own product pages.2 It's designed for:
Guided DIY filing: interview-style preparation of federal and state returns for individuals and small businesses.
Automatic import: pulls W-2s, 1099s, and investment data from employers, brokerages, and financial institutions, and can pre-fill forms from a photo of a document.
Expert help when you want it: Live Expert Assist adds on-demand CPA/EA review during self-filing; Expert Full Service matches a tax professional who prepares and files the return for you.
Planning tools: the TaxCaster refund estimator and a W-4 withholding calculator, plus prior-year access and amended-return filing.
About TurboTax: the software traces back to 1984, when it was created by ChipSoft (founded by Michael Chipman and others). Intuit acquired it in 1993, according to the same pages, and TurboTax now comes in desktop and online versions, with add-ons such as audit support and Refund Advance.
Good to know about TurboTax
Here are quick answers to what people ask most about TurboTax:3
What does it cost? TurboTax prices per federal return, with state returns priced separately. It has offered a free edition for simple returns (eligibility limits apply) plus paid do-it-yourself and expert-help tiers above that. Pricing and eligibility change each filing season, according to TurboTax's own pricing page, so confirm current figures on turbotax.intuit.com.
How does filing work? You answer questions, TurboTax imports what it can from your employers and financial institutions, and it assembles the forms. It's a once-a-year workflow, focused on that single return.
What does it see? Only what you import or enter for the return in front of it. Your bank balances, investment portfolio, retirement accounts, loans, and crypto sit in different places the rest of the year, behind separate logins TurboTax doesn't read.
What about the rest of the year? TurboTax isn't built to watch it. Tax-smart moves, such as Roth conversions, automatic gain/loss offsetting, and charitable bunching, are usually decided before you open TurboTax, across accounts it doesn't see. Seeing them together is where an AI connector adds the most.
One TurboTax-specific detail matters here: the TaxCaster estimator and W-4 calculator project from the numbers you type in. An AI connected to your actual accounts can supply those inputs from current balances and holdings instead of memory.
TurboTax API: getting your TurboTax data for AI
Does TurboTax have an API? Not a public one for your own account data. Intuit's developer integrations are partner-gated, so there's no consumer-facing TurboTax API to plug into an assistant. Truthifi doesn't connect to TurboTax itself. Instead, Truthifi gives your AI assistant read-only, programmatic access over MCP (the Model Context Protocol) to the accounts behind your return. That's the practical "TurboTax API" for AI: no code and no official TurboTax API required. Your assistant can query balances, holdings, and transactions across those connected accounts in one view, read-only by architecture. Connect your accounts to your AI →
How Truthifi can help
We link your real accounts to your AI assistant and bring your whole financial picture into one view it can reason about: accounts across 18,000+ institutions, per Truthifi platform data, decoded into clean data instead of a raw feed. We're an independent source with no commissions, no ads, no advice, so the only thing we do with your data is connect it to the AI you choose. Along the way, Truthifi's Refinery corrects and reconciles what it reads before your AI sees it, so answers start from checked numbers rather than raw feeds. Once that link is live, here's what you can ask:
"Right now, what's my net worth across my connected accounts?"
"Is my retirement on track, and what's pulling my returns down?"
"Which holdings are costing me the most in fees?"
"Where is my concentration highest, and does that pose a risk?"
Here's where TurboTax's own import feature shows its limit. Say your 1099-B comes from a taxable brokerage account, while your 401(k) and Roth IRA sit at two other institutions. At filing time, TurboTax can import that 1099-B automatically, which tells it what you sold last year. It can't tell you, in October, which taxable positions sit at a loss today. Nor can it show how a partial Roth conversion would fit against the other two accounts. With those accounts connected, the AI can work through both in a single question while there's still time to act. The same view may also surface two funds in different accounts that quietly overlap, or a fee that didn't show up on any single statement.
The import covers what already happened. For what's still open, Truthifi surfaces the data behind Roth-conversion, loss-harvesting, and fee decisions, such as fee totals by account, for you and your tax preparer or advisor to review. Real examples:
"Before I file, are there tax-loss-harvesting candidates in my taxable account I should act on?"
"Given all my accounts, does a partial Roth conversion make sense this year, and how much room do I have?"
"If I bunch two years of charitable giving into one, what does that do to my picture?"
Because Truthifi refreshes from your institutions automatically once a day, your AI works from clean, consistent, decoded data rather than last year's forms. On scope: Truthifi covers investments, net worth, fees, and cross-account data. Preparing and filing your actual return stays in TurboTax, which remains the right tool for that job. Truthifi connects the accounts behind your taxes, not TurboTax itself, and its view is only as complete as the accounts you link. It also doesn't tell you what to do; the decisions stay with you.
If you're the preparer or advisor on the other side of that conversation, the same connected view gives you and your client current balances and fee totals to review together, rather than a stack of year-end statements. If you're a first-time filer, you don't need to know what automatic gain/loss offsetting is yet; asking your AI to explain your own numbers in plain English is a fine place to start.
Two ways to start. Run a free portfolio-analysis scan and let Truthifi turn your connected accounts into a plain-language scorecard, or link them to the AI assistant you already use and ask questions in plain English. Every current consumer plan, including the free ones, supports live AI access.
How to connect your accounts to your AI assistant
The whole setup runs in your browser, no command line, on any MCP-capable assistant.
Sign up free at truthifi.com. No credit card is needed for the free tier.
Link your accounts: the brokerage, retirement, bank, and crypto accounts behind your taxes, through Truthifi's secure Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts connection.
Turn on MCP access: creating an account and running a portfolio-analysis scan is free; connecting your accounts to a live AI assistant (MCP) works on every current consumer plan, including free ones. The full diagnostic suite of 130+ automated checks, according to Truthifi's own figures, is part of the paid Monitoring plan (see current pricing).
Add Truthifi to your assistant. The connector URL is the same in each assistant: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. Inside your assistant, find its connector settings (usually Settings → Connectors), add a custom connector called Truthifi, and paste in the URL. Authorize it to finish. (Some assistants limit custom connectors to paid plans, so check yours. For exact, step-by-step setup for your specific assistant, see the connect guides.)
Turn it on and ask: "Before tax season, are there moves I should make across my accounts?"
What you can ask your AI
"Today, what's my net worth across my connected accounts?"
"Are there tax-loss-harvesting candidates in my taxable accounts right now?"
"Does a partial Roth conversion make sense this year, and how much room do I have?"
"Add up this year's fund fees across my connected accounts, then project the 10-year cost assuming 7% growth."
"Break down my biggest concentrations by holding, sector, and single account, and flag whether any of it is risky."
"Using my current holdings, roughly how might my portfolio have fared in a 2008-style downturn, and what assumptions is that estimate based on?"
"Given my current savings rate, am I on track to retire? Run the numbers for conservative, moderate, and optimistic cases."
"Surface any duplicate or overlapping holdings across my accounts that I wasn't aware of."

Is it safe to connect my accounts to Truthifi?
The safeguards are structural, not just promises. No online connection is ever completely risk-free, but these protections are built into how it works. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and Truthifi's access to bank and brokerage accounts is read-only. Your assistant gets a sign-in token rather than your password, which you can revoke any time.
Read-only by architecture. We can't move money, place trades, or change a setting. That limit is built into the connection itself, not just written into the terms of service.
Your credentials don't pass through Truthifi. Your login is encrypted in your browser and passed straight to the aggregator (Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts), which returns a read-only token.
Every request logged. You get per-tool daily and monthly counts of what each AI assistant accessed, useful for your own oversight.
Bank-grade encryption in transit and at rest, and you control access per account. Revoke it anytime in your assistant's connector settings or inside Truthifi (Connections → Agents → Revoke).
Common questions about TurboTax
Is TurboTax worth it? For many filers, yes, if guided, interview-style filing with automatic W-2 and 1099 import and optional expert help fits how you do your taxes. If your real question is "am I making the right tax moves before April," that's a year-round, cross-account question, and adding Truthifi brings your investments and fees into your AI so those decisions happen with fuller information. A quick test: if your investments sit at two or more institutions, ask your AI this fall which taxable positions are at a loss. If it can't answer, that's the gap a year-round connector fills.
What do people say about TurboTax? In the public reviews and community discussion we reviewed in October 2026 (see note 3), most comments centered on the filing experience and pricing. Pricing varies by tier and changes each season, so confirm current figures on turbotax.intuit.com. Beyond the annual return, a connector like Truthifi lets your AI see investments, fees, and net worth across the rest of the year.
Are there alternatives to TurboTax? Other tax-prep options exist, and the right one depends on your return. If what you actually want is an AI that sees your whole financial life before you file, that's a different tool. A connector like Truthifi sits on top of the accounts you already have, alongside whatever software you use to file.
Why doesn't TurboTax see my full financial picture? It's built to prepare one return at a time and reads only what you import or enter for it. A year-round connector like Truthifi covers the other side, watching the accounts you connect between filings.
Do I need to write code to set up Truthifi? No. The entire Truthifi setup runs in your browser, no command line, API keys, or config files.
Which AI assistants does Truthifi work with? Any MCP-capable assistant can use the same Truthifi connector URL. MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic and adopted by OpenAI and others, so the range of compatible assistants keeps growing.
Truthifi between filings
TurboTax handles the annual filing well. The opportunities that move the needle, though, often surface between filings: the unharvested loss, the lapsed election, the gain that accumulated unwatched. Connecting your accounts year-round is how you catch them before the window closes. We built Truthifi as the Continuous, Universal, Decoded layer that monitors your connected accounts with daily refreshes and surfaces the fee, concentration and other data behind time-sensitive decisions. Our recommendation: keep TurboTax for the return, and connect your accounts by early fall so the review happens while your trades can still change the outcome. One practical habit: put a fall check-in on your calendar, ask your AI the loss-harvesting and Roth-conversion questions above, and bring its answers to whoever prepares your return.
