To get useful answers about your business finances from an AI assistant, not generic advice, your AI has to see your real numbers. If you run Xero, there's a head start: Xero ships its own MCP server, so an AI assistant can read your books. The gap is everything outside the books, the bank accounts, cards, loans, payroll platforms, and investments that live in separate logins beyond Xero's ledger. This guide covers what Xero's own MCP server does and how to lay a read-only, whole-picture layer over it, so your AI sees the full business balance sheet, not just the bookkeeping slice. No code, free to start.
That gap shows up even in a well-run file. Your ledger might be reconciled to the penny, and you still can't answer the bigger question: what's actually happening across the whole business. That answer depends on accounts outside Xero, each behind its own login — the bank, brokerage and card accounts you connect to Truthifi. Bring those accounts together and your AI can see the full picture.
What is an MCP?
MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant securely reach outside data and read it live, with your permission, instead of you pasting in numbers or uploading statements. Anthropic introduced it, OpenAI and others have since adopted it, and more AI assistants now support it. A "Xero MCP" is a connector that feeds your Xero data to your AI this way. For how Truthifi's own connector works, see the Truthifi MCP overview.
Does Xero have an MCP server?
Yes, Xero has its own official MCP server. The XeroAPI/xero-mcp-server repo lives under XeroAPI, Xero's own developer GitHub organization, which confirms it's Xero's official server, built to expose the Xero accounting API to AI agents over the Model Context Protocol. There's also a companion official repo, XeroAPI/xero-agent-toolkit, with AI-agent examples on top of the Xero API. A few unofficial community servers exist too (john-zhang-dev/xero-mcp, LokiMCPUniverse/xero-mcp-server, joeswann/xero-mcp, and wyre-technology/xero-mcp), each described as using OAuth 2.0 against the Xero API. Xero doesn't maintain them, so check each one's recent activity and the permissions it requests before you give it access to your books.1
Two things to know about it:
It's built for the books. Xero's MCP gives your AI assistant invoices, reconciled transactions, contacts, and reports: the ledger Xero already maintains.
It sees Xero only. That's by design: a single-app MCP reads only the one app it belongs to. Your bank balances, credit utilization, loan liabilities, and investment positions live in other institutions that Xero's MCP doesn't read.
Bringing those into view alongside the bookkeeping ledger takes a separate read-only, whole-picture layer. That's where Truthifi comes in (below, or learn more).
What Xero does
Xero is cloud-based accounting software for small businesses, sole traders, and SMBs.2 Founded in 2006 in Wellington, New Zealand, it reports over 4.6 million customers worldwide, according to Xero's own pages (2025). That's a self-reported figure (reviewed January 2025), not an independently verified count. What it handles:
Online invoicing, bill payment, and bank reconciliation with automated bank feeds.
Cash flow reporting and analytics: customizable financial reports, with a Syft Analytics integration.
Expense claims and receipt capture via the Hubdoc integration.
Payroll management, available by region.
An app ecosystem of 1,000+ third-party integrations via the Xero App Store, plus Xero HQ and Practice Manager tools for accounting and bookkeeping practices.
JAX, Xero's AI assistant for routine task automation and financial Q&A inside the product.
Free standard ACH bill payments included in US business plans, with multi-currency support and project tracking on higher tiers.
On pricing, according to Xero's US pricing page (reviewed October 2026), US plans start at Early (around $25/month), with Growing and Established tiers above that. Promotional discounts for new accounts have been offered at times, and Xero has offered the first month free on its plans.3 There's no permanent free business tier listed.
About Xero: founded 2006 by Rod Drury and Hamish Edwards · headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand · publicly listed (NZX/ASX: XRO) · apps for web, iOS, and Android.
Good to know about Xero
These are the questions we hear most often about Xero:4
What does it cost? US plans start around $25/month (Early), with Growing and Established tiers above; the first month has been offered free. Confirm current pricing on Xero's pricing page.
What's it best at? The reconciled ledger, invoices, bills, bank reconciliation, and reports, plus a deep app ecosystem and tools built for accountants and bookkeepers.
Does it have an MCP / AI story? Yes. Beyond the official MCP server covered above, there's JAX inside the product. Both work from your Xero accounting data, not the accounts outside it.
What lives outside Xero? Bank accounts, business credit cards, lines of credit and loans, payroll platforms, and any investment or reserve accounts sit in separate logins, and a single-app MCP, by design, doesn't ingest them. That's where adding Truthifi pays off most.
Xero API: getting your Xero data for AI
Does Xero have an API? Yes. According to Xero's developer documentation (reviewed January 2025), Xero publishes a public Accounting API at developer.xero.com, used widely by third-party apps. It's the same accounting API the official MCP server's repo describes itself as exposing to AI agents.1 Using it directly means registering an app and handling OAuth 2.0 yourself. For the accounts outside Xero, Truthifi gives your AI assistant read-only, programmatic access over MCP (the Model Context Protocol), with no code. Run it alongside Xero's MCP and your assistant can query balances, holdings, and transactions across your books and your connected accounts in one conversation. Connect your accounts to your AI →
How Truthifi can help
Xero's MCP feeds your books to your AI. Truthifi is the complementary read-only, whole-picture, decoded layer Xero's single-app MCP isn't. It links your real accounts across 18,000+ institutions, according to Truthifi (2026), and brings them into one view your AI can reason about. That view is decoded into clean data rather than a raw feed, from an independent source with no commissions, no ads, no advice. Truthifi says its Refinery corrects and reconciles what it reads, and Truthifi's own platform data (2026) puts its checks at 130+ automated diagnostics. Both are Truthifi's product claims rather than an independent audit, and they're aimed at giving your AI checked numbers to work from. On scope: Truthifi doesn't connect Xero itself, since Xero's own MCP already does the books; Truthifi brings everything behind and around them. Once it's linked up, here are some things you could ask (more in our guide to asking your AI about your real accounts):
"What's my net worth across my connected accounts right now?"
"Am I on track to retire, and what's dragging on my returns?"
"Which of my investments cost the most in fees?"
"Where am I most concentrated, and is that a risk?"
Picture a Xero file kept exactly the way Xero intends: each bank-feed line reconciled, receipts in Hubdoc, and JAX ready to list overdue invoices. But the company's reserves sit in a personal brokerage, and an SBA loan, two credit cards, and a payroll platform each have their own login. The Xero books record what's been reconciled; they don't show what the brokerage holds today. So "across all of it, how much real liquidity do I have, and what's my true net position?" usually means five separate logins. Once those accounts are linked, one question to the AI can get that answer. Linking even a second account may also surface something easy to miss in separate logins, such as a credit line drawn down further than expected.
With both your Xero books (via Xero's MCP) and the accounts behind them (via Truthifi) in front of your AI, the two close the gap between what's in the books and what's actually happening across the whole balance sheet. For example:
"My P&L in the books looks healthy, but given my real bank balances and credit utilization, what's my actual liquidity this month?"
"Across your connected accounts, including the ones outside the books, what's my true net position?"
"If I move $5,000 a month from operating cash into a reserve investment account, what does that do to my net worth over 10 years?"
Unlike Xero bank feeds, which you reconcile line by line, Truthifi's links refresh without you touching them. The main upkeep is re-authorizing a link if a bank login changes. It also normalizes and reconciles balances and transactions across your connected accounts, so your AI works from clean, consistent data. To be clear about scope, Truthifi covers cross-institution balances, net worth, liabilities, and investments. Your accounting, invoicing, and payroll workflows stay in Xero.
You don't have to assemble this yourself. A free scan gives you a decoded read on your connected accounts: fees, concentration, and the other checks Truthifi runs. Connecting your own AI assistant works on every current consumer plan, including the free ones. On paid plans and Connect Explore, Truthifi refreshes your data automatically once a day. The paid Monitoring plan ($8.99/mo or $79.99/yr as of October 2026) adds the full diagnostic suite.
How to connect your accounts to your AI assistant
There's no command line here. The whole setup runs in your browser, on any MCP-capable assistant that supports custom connectors.
Set up a free Truthifi account at truthifi.com — the free tier needs no credit card.
Link your accounts: the business banks, cards, loans, and any investment or reserve accounts that live outside Xero, through Truthifi's secure Plaid, Yodlee, or ByAllAccounts connection.
Turn on MCP access: it works on current consumer plans, including free ones (see pricing above).
Add Truthifi to your assistant. The connector URL is the same everywhere: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. In your assistant, open its connector settings, usually Settings → Connectors. Add a custom connector named Truthifi, paste the URL, and authorize. (Most assistants require a paid plan for custom connectors. See the connect guides for exact, step-by-step setup on your specific assistant.)
Turn it on and ask: "Across your connected accounts, what's my true net position right now?"
What you can ask your AI
"What's my net worth across my connected accounts today, including the ones outside the books?"
"Given my real bank balances and credit utilization, what's my actual liquidity this month?"
"Total up the fees I'm paying across my connected accounts this year, and show the 10-year cost at 7% growth."
"Am I on pace to retire at my current savings rate? Model conservative, moderate, and optimistic cases."
"Where am I most concentrated, by holding, sector, and single account, and is any of it a risk?"
"Stress-test my whole portfolio against a 2008-style drop: how far would I fall, and how long to recover?"
"If I move $5,000 a month from operating cash into reserves, what does that do to my net worth over 10 and 20 years?"
"Find any duplicate or overlapping holdings across my accounts that I didn't realize I had."
With & Without Truthifi
A basic connector gets an account into your AI, and that part works well for what it does. Truthifi layers on top, turning those raw feeds into verified, household-level data your AI can reason on.

Is it safe to connect my accounts to Truthifi?
No online connection is completely risk-free, but these protections are built into how the connection works, not just promised (more on how Truthifi keeps your accounts secure):
Read-only by architecture: Truthifi can't move money, place trades, or change a setting. That constraint is built into the connection itself, not just stated in the terms of service.
Your credentials don't pass through Truthifi. Your login is encrypted in your browser and passed to your bank (open banking) or the aggregator (Plaid, Yodlee, or ByAllAccounts), which returns a read-only token.
Each request is logged: you get per-tool daily and monthly counts of what each AI assistant accessed, useful for your own oversight.
Industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest, and you control access per account and can revoke it anytime, in your assistant's connector settings or inside Truthifi (Connections → Agents → Revoke).
Common questions about Xero
Is Xero worth it? For the reconciled ledger, invoices, bills, bank reconciliation, and reports, it's a deep tool with a large app ecosystem. Whether it fits comes down to your business and region, and the first month is free to test. If your real question is "what's happening across my whole balance sheet," that's a cross-institution view, which Truthifi brings into your AI alongside the books.
Does Xero have an MCP server? Yes. Xero ships its own official MCP server (XeroAPI/xero-mcp-server, under Xero's own GitHub org; check GitHub for its current activity), built to expose the Xero accounting API to AI agents. It reads Xero. To give your AI the accounts outside the books, banks, cards, loans, investments, add a connector like Truthifi.
What do people say about Xero? Most of the conversation is about the accounting workflow itself and the value of the plan tiers across regions. Beyond the books, many add a connector like Truthifi so their AI can also see the bank, card, loan, and investment accounts a single-app MCP doesn't ingest.
Are there alternatives to Xero? Yes, other accounting tools exist. QuickBooks, which is made by Intuit, has its own QuickBooks MCP guide; Intuit's broader MCP options are covered separately in the Intuit MCP guide. But if what you actually want is an AI that sees your whole financial life, the ledger and the accounts behind it, that's a complementary connector like Truthifi, which sits alongside whatever accounting software you keep.
Do I need to write code to set up Truthifi? No. The entire Truthifi setup runs in your browser, no command line, API keys, or config files. (Xero's own MCP server is the developer-oriented piece; Truthifi's whole-picture layer is the no-code path.)
Which AI assistants does Truthifi work with? Generally, any MCP-capable assistant that supports custom connectors. Because MCP is an open standard, a growing range of AI assistants can use the Truthifi connector. For step-by-step setup on a specific assistant, see the connect guides below.
Truthifi between filings
Xero handles the annual ritual well, the filings, the reconciled books. But the opportunities that move the needle live between filings: the unharvested loss, the lapsed election, the gain that accumulated unwatched. Left to last year's manually assembled numbers, those items can go unnoticed until the window has closed. Because each connected account refreshes daily, your AI works from current data when you ask about them. You can then take what you find to your accountant while there's still time to act on it.

The short version
Xero handles the books, and ships its own MCP server so your AI can read them. To give your AI the rest of your financial life, the banks, cards, loans, and investments behind and around the ledger, add Truthifi. Free to start, about three minutes, no code. Connect your accounts to your AI → See every connector on the financial MCP servers hub, or browse all connect guides.
One test worth running on day one: with both connectors on, ask your AI whether the cash balance in your Xero books matches the live balances at your bank. Where the two disagree is often the first place a missed bank feed or an unrecorded transaction shows up. Ask the same question each month and a spread that keeps widening can mean reconciliation is slipping behind.
