Your AI can only reason about the Vanguard data it can see, and Vanguard gives it no direct way in: no MCP server and no public retail API. Truthifi's engine corrects and reconciles what it reads from each connected account on every refresh, so the Vanguard numbers your AI sees are reconciled, not raw. You can see how the connector works on the Truthifi MCP page and in how Truthifi keeps your accounts secure; the full method is detailed in Truthifi's State of Financial Data report (request a copy). This guide covers connecting Vanguard to an AI assistant. Link your Vanguard IRA or brokerage account, plus a 401(k) or bank account held elsewhere, and your investments, fees, and net worth sit in one place instead of scattered across separate logins. Your AI can then start answering questions like what you pay on top of Vanguard's 0.07% average fund cost. Setup takes no code and is free to start. Get started with Truthifi

Vanguard's dashboard does a good job of reporting your Vanguard funds, yet it can't tell you whether the 401(k) at your employer's recordkeeper and the brokerage at another firm, added to those funds, put you on track to retire. That answer sits across separate logins until you connect them.

What is an MCP?

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic and since adopted by OpenAI and others, that lets an AI assistant read your data live through a connection you grant and can cut anytime, rather than you copy-pasting numbers or uploading statements. A growing range of AI assistants now support it. A "Vanguard MCP" simply means a connector that brings your Vanguard account data to your assistant this way. For how Truthifi's own connector works, see Truthifi MCP.

Does Vanguard have an MCP server?

Not an official one: as of October 8, 2026, The Vanguard Group, Inc. hasn't published an MCP server, which fits a firm that also keeps retail account data inside its own website and apps. None of the repositories found on GitHub are owned or operated by Vanguard's official organization.

One community-built option turned up: stockpilot-tools/stockpilot-mcp (mirrored at stockpilottools/stockpilot-mcp), a MCP server (read-only) for stock portfolio analytics. Its own description says it supports 30+ brokerages, including Vanguard; we haven't tested that claim and found no independent evidence that it works with Vanguard accounts. Two things worth knowing:

  • It is not affiliated with Vanguard in any way, so check its authentication method, maintainers, and reviews yourself before relying on it.

  • It covers only portfolio analytics, not the full cross-institution picture, decoded fee detection, or retirement-readiness context that comes from connecting your other accounts.

Vanguard also offers no public retail brokerage API. Institutional and plan-sponsor integrations appear to run through proprietary channels only, so individual investors appear to have no developer path in.

If you want a no-code path that covers your whole financial picture, Vanguard and your other accounts, that's where Truthifi comes in.

What Vanguard does

Vanguard is one of the world's largest investment management companies, founded in 1975 by John C. Bogle and headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, with an unusual structure: the funds own the company, and the funds are owned by Vanguard's fund shareholders, aligning the company's interests directly with investors.1 It's built for:

  • Low-cost index investing: Vanguard's average ETF and mutual fund expense ratio is 0.07% versus an industry average of 0.44% (per vanguard.com, reviewed October 2026).

  • Long-term retirement accounts: IRAs, 401(k) plan services, and 529 college savings plans alongside standard brokerage accounts.

  • Robo and human advisory: Vanguard Digital Advisor (targeting roughly 0.15% net advisory fee) and Vanguard Personal Advisor Services (approximately 0.30% annually), as listed on vanguard.com, reviewed October 2026.

  • Broad fund performance: Vanguard's own performance page, citing LSEG Lipper data, reported (when reviewed in October 2026) that 276 of 333 Vanguard funds outperformed their Lipper peer-group averages over the 10 years ended March 31, 2026. This is Vanguard's self-reported figure, which we haven't independently verified, and Vanguard updates it periodically, so check the page for the latest period.

  • Investor education: retirement planning tools, market insights, and a deep library of investor resources.

Good to know about Vanguard

Quick answers to what people ask most:2

  • What does it cost? No account minimums for most brokerage accounts. Average ETF/mutual fund expense ratio: 0.07%. No commissions on online trades of Vanguard ETFs and most stocks. Advisory services: roughly 0.15% (Digital Advisor) to 0.30% (Personal Advisor Services) annually, as listed on vanguard.com, reviewed October 2026.

  • How do I see my total all-in cost? The fund expense ratio is embedded inside the fund's daily return, so it doesn't show up as a separate line item on a statement. Advisory fees, by contrast, appear separately. Seeing your true all-in cost, fund ERs plus advisory fees plus any account fees, across your connected accounts is something Vanguard's own app doesn't break out in one total. It's exactly what Truthifi's data layer decodes and totals. The easy-to-miss part: when the fund layer costs as little as 0.07%, the layers around it can carry most of the bill. Both are annual percentages, but they apply to different bases: the expense ratio to each fund's assets, the advisory fee to the full advised balance. Because the advised balance usually includes those same fund holdings, the two charges stack rather than substitute. Since the bases differ, a ratio between the two averages isn't a meaningful figure. The practical point is simpler: on an advised account, a fee of about 0.30% sits on top of funds averaging 0.07%, and your own total will depend on your funds and service. So the sharper question for your AI is often less "which fund is cheapest" and more "what am I paying on top of my funds, and in accounts outside Vanguard?"

  • What about accounts at other institutions? Vanguard's app is built around Vanguard accounts. If you hold a 401(k) with your employer's plan provider, a checking account at a bank, or a brokerage at another firm, those balances typically don't appear in Vanguard's interface, so your net worth ends up split across separate logins.

  • Is there a public API or data export? No public retail brokerage API exists for individual investors, so programmatic access to your own account data isn't currently available from Vanguard directly.

  • What's missing from Vanguard's own reporting? Cross-institution aggregation, decoded all-in cost totals, tax-lot context across custodians, and holistic net-worth context are all things the fragmented system of separate accounts makes difficult to see, and where adding Truthifi to your setup changes what's possible.

Vanguard API: getting your Vanguard data for AI

Does Vanguard have an API? Not in the sense of a public API for your own account data. Connecting Vanguard through Truthifi gives your AI assistant read-only, programmatic access to your Vanguard account data over MCP (the Model Context Protocol). That is the practical "Vanguard API" for AI: no code, and no official Vanguard API required. Your assistant can query balances, holdings, and transactions across Vanguard and your other connected accounts in one view. Connect your accounts to your AI →

How Truthifi can help

Truthifi pulls your linked accounts into a single view your AI can reason about: accounts at 18,000+ institutions, decoded into clean data rather than a raw feed, from an independent source with no commissions, no ads, no advice. That correction and reconciliation happens in Truthifi's Refinery, so your AI works from verified numbers. For your investment accounts, Truthifi runs 130+ automated diagnostics and reconciles each holding with synthetic share accounting, so cash moving in or out doesn't distort your true performance. Once connected, here's what you can ask it:

  • "What's my net worth across my connected accounts right now?"

  • "Is my retirement on track, and what's holding my returns back?"

  • "Which holdings of mine cost the most in fees?"

  • "Where am I most concentrated, and is that a risk?"

Say your Roth IRA and taxable account both sit at Vanguard in low-cost index funds and ETFs, the taxable side is enrolled in Personal Advisor Services, and your 401(k) is run by your employer's recordkeeper. Vanguard's dashboard reports the two Vanguard accounts well. But "given all of it, can I retire at 62, and what is the advice layer costing me on top of 0.07% funds?" has usually lived across separate logins. Connect those accounts, and your assistant can answer it in a single question. Linking accounts across institutions can also surface things separate logins hide. Two illustrative examples: two funds that turn out to hold mostly the same underlying stocks, or a fund cost that doesn't appear as a separate line item on any statement.

Without a public API or MCP server, there's no direct path we know of from your Vanguard account to an AI assistant without an aggregation layer. Truthifi provides that layer, connecting Vanguard through Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts and combining it with the other accounts you link. With your Vanguard holdings and your other accounts in front of your AI, you can ask questions that require seeing them together:

  • "Total up what I'm paying in fund expense ratios and advisory fees across my connected accounts this year, and show me the 10-year cost at 7% growth."

  • "Where am I most concentrated across my Vanguard IRA, my 401(k), and my taxable account, and is any of it a risk I haven't seen?"

  • "Given my current savings rate and balances across my connected accounts, model my retirement at 60, 62, and 65, conservative and optimistic scenarios."

Truthifi's own focus stays narrow: investments, net worth, and data that spans accounts. Account management, fund selection, and transactions stay in Vanguard's own platform. You keep using it for what it does best and add Truthifi to bring the whole picture to your AI.

Two ways to start with Vanguard. Run a free portfolio-analysis scan and let Truthifi turn your Vanguard account and the rest of your accounts into a plain-language scorecard, or connect them to the AI assistant you already use and ask in plain English.

Is it safe to connect my accounts to Truthifi?

No online connection is ever completely risk-free, but these safeguards are structural, built into how the connection works rather than just promised:

  • Read-only by architecture. For a Vanguard account, Truthifi can't move money, place trades, or change a setting. That limit is built into the connection itself, not written into a terms-of-service page.

  • Credentials never pass through Truthifi. Encrypted right in your browser, your login goes directly to the aggregator (Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts), which hands back a read-only token.

  • Every request logged. You get per-tool daily and monthly counts of what each AI assistant accessed, useful for your own oversight.

  • Bank-grade encryption in transit and at rest, and you control access per account, revoke it anytime, in your assistant's connector settings or inside Truthifi (Connections → Agents → Revoke).

How to connect your Vanguard account to your AI assistant

The whole setup runs in your browser, no command line, on any MCP-capable assistant.

  • Create a free Truthifi account at truthifi.com, no credit card for the free tier.

  • Link your accounts: your Vanguard IRA, brokerage, or other accounts, plus any 401(k), bank, and other investment accounts you hold, through Truthifi's secure Plaid, Yodlee, or Morningstar ByAllAccounts connection.

  • Turn on MCP access: creating an account and running a portfolio-analysis scan is free, and connecting your accounts to a live AI assistant (MCP) works on every current consumer plan, including free ones. The full suite of 130+ automated diagnostics is part of the paid Monitoring plan ($8.99/mo or $79.99/yr as of October 2026; confirm current pricing on the pricing page).

  • Add Truthifi to your assistant. The connector URL is the same everywhere: https://api.truthifi.com/mcp. In your assistant, open its connector settings (usually Settings → Connectors), add a custom connector named Truthifi, paste the URL, and authorize. (Most assistants require a paid plan for custom connectors. The connect guides linked below walk through exact setup steps for your specific assistant.)

  • Turn it on and ask: "What's my net worth across my connected accounts, and am I on track to retire?"

What you can ask your AI

  • "What's my net worth across my connected accounts right now?"

  • "Total up the fund expense ratios and advisory fees I'm paying across my connected accounts this year, and show the 10-year cost at 7% growth."

  • "Will I be ready to retire at 62 at my current savings rate? Model conservative, moderate, and optimistic cases."

  • "Where am I most concentrated, by holding, sector, and asset class, across my Vanguard accounts and my other connected accounts?"

  • "Find any overlapping or duplicate holdings across my accounts that I didn't realize I had."

  • "Stress-test my whole portfolio against a 2008-style drop: how far would I fall, and how long to recover?"

  • "If I increase my monthly contribution by $500, what does that do to my net worth over 10 and 20 years?"

  • "Which accounts are most tax-efficient for my situation, and where am I leaving money on the table?"

For financial advisors

If you're an RIA or financial advisor, it's the same idea pointed at your book: connect your clients' accounts, Vanguard plus other custodians and their held-away accounts, and ask your AI assistant questions across the whole book, read-only. Truthifi can't trade, bill, or change a setting; it's the decoded, cross-custodian context layer on top of the systems you already run.

Where it helps most is the held-away blind spot: assets a client holds outside Vanguard that never show up in your primary view. With those accounts connected, your AI can answer book-level and per-client questions:

  • "Across my whole book, which clients are most concentrated in a single stock or sector?"

  • "Show held-away assets my clients hold outside Vanguard that I'm not seeing in my primary view."

  • "Which clients are paying the most in total fees across my connected accounts, not just what I manage?"

  • "Flag allocation drift over 5% from target across my connected households this quarter."

Truthifi is additive and read-only, not a portfolio-management system, CRM, or custodian, and not a replacement for Vanguard. It brings cross-account context your other tools may not show, and you'll find more connectors on the financial MCP servers hub.

Common questions about Vanguard

Does Vanguard have an MCP server? No official MCP server exists as of October 8, 2026. One community-built repo (stockpilot-tools/stockpilot-mcp) claims Vanguard support but is unaffiliated with Vanguard, unvetted, and has no established developer track record that we could find. For a no-code path that covers Vanguard and the other accounts you connect, Truthifi is the practical option.

Is Vanguard worth it? Vanguard's low-cost structure and mutual ownership model are genuinely distinctive, the average fund expense ratio of 0.07% is hard to argue with for long-term index investors. If your real question is whether your whole financial picture is on track, that requires seeing Vanguard alongside your other accounts, which is where adding Truthifi to your setup changes what you can ask.

What do people say about Vanguard? In the sources we reviewed (r/Bogleheads, r/personalfinance, NerdWallet, Investopedia, Bankrate and the CFPB complaint database; see the sources note below), Vanguard generally draws strong reviews for low costs and long-term performance. Our read of those sources is informal and qualitative, not a tally of reviews, but the frustrations we noticed most often weren't about the funds themselves. They tended to concern managing accounts across separate logins and the lack of programmatic access to your own data, which we see as a system-level issue across brokerages rather than a Vanguard-specific one. Connecting those accounts through an aggregator is one way to see them together.

Are there alternatives to Vanguard? Other low-cost brokerages exist. But if your real goal is an AI that can reason about your whole financial life, the accounts you connect, decoded, that's a connector like Truthifi. It sits on top of the accounts you already have, alongside whichever brokerage you use.

Does Vanguard have a public API? No. Vanguard offers no public retail brokerage API for individual investors. Institutional integrations appear to run through proprietary channels only. This means there's no direct developer path from a Vanguard account to an AI assistant without an aggregation layer like Truthifi.

Do I need to write code to set up Truthifi? No. The entire Truthifi setup runs in your browser, no command line, API keys, or config files.

Which AI assistants does Truthifi work with? Truthifi is built to work with MCP-capable AI assistants. MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic and since adopted by OpenAI and others, so a growing range of assistants support it. For step-by-step setup guides by assistant, see the connect guides linked below.

Is it safe to connect my Vanguard account to Truthifi? Access is read-only by architecture, Truthifi can't move money or place trades. Your login goes straight to the aggregator, which returns a read-only token, so credentials never pass through Truthifi. Every data request is logged, and data is bank-grade encrypted in transit and at rest. Access can be controlled per account and revoked anytime.

Truthifi and your accounts beyond Vanguard

Truthifi brings the accounts you connect, from held-away retirement accounts to a spouse's brokerage, into one decoded, benchmarked picture that you own and can hand to your AI. One useful first question: ask your AI to split your total cost into the fund layer and everything layered on top of it. That split may matter most at a decision point, such as weighing whether to roll an old employer 401(k) into a Vanguard IRA. With both accounts connected, your AI can set the plan's fund costs beside what comparable Vanguard funds charge, using your actual holdings rather than industry averages, so the comparison starts from your numbers instead of a guess.
